On the other hand, a practical design process makes necessary compromises to meet project constraints and deadlines.

Designing for a new product

In this scenario, a user-centered, Design Thinking approach is ideal. For instance, Airbnb's design process prioritizes users' needs and feedback, leading to an innovative and unique product. Conversely, Juicero failed to use a Design Thinking approach, resulting in a complicated, expensive product that did not address users' needs.

Designing for a complex system

Systems Thinking approach is ideal in this scenario. Tesla's design process considers the interconnections and interdependencies of car components, resulting in a holistic and integrated product that meets users' needs. In contrast, an overly complex and convoluted design may lead to poor adoption rates and a negative user experience.

Tight Deadline

When under a tight deadline, creating a basic version of the product with pre-built UI components and templates is practical. However, when practicality overshadows usability and functionality, as seen in Healthcare.gov's launch, it can lead to numerous usability issues that can hurt the product's success.
